DE WORMING SCEDULE:
Puppy & Adult Stage:
You have two choices when it comes to de-worming your puppies. First, you can take your puppy to the Vet and have the doctor give you a prescription for the de-worming medication. This is highly recommended as the Vet can also give your puppies an examination at the same time. Second, you could buy over the counter de-worming medication online and have it sent to your house. Either way, you will want to follow the following schedule to de-worm your puppies:
Give your puppies one dose each of their de-worming medication on their birthdays below.
20 DAYS OLD half tablet
4 WEEKS OLD 1 tablet
6 WEEKS OLD 1 tablet
8 WEEKS OLD 1 tablet
3 MONTHS OLD 2 tablets
4 MONTHS OLD 2 tablets
5 MONTHS OLD 3 tablets
6 MONTHS OLD 4 tablets
After 6 months of age, you will want to begin administering a heartworm medication once per month. This will keep your dog healthy and prevent your dog from contracting any worms in the future. You can look at it as part of your dogs maintenance program.
Possible De-worming Medications
You can buy de-worming medications from your Vet or use a site like Petrx.com. This site sells prescription and over-the-counter medications for dogs. They often have free shipping offers and their rates are highly reasonable.
Hartz now has an Advanced Care Once-a-Month Wormer for Puppies. This medication is dispersed based on the puppies body weight so you will need a scale in order to determine how many pills to give the puppy. The puppy would get 1 capful for each 2 ½ pounds that he or she weighs. That means if the puppy is five pounds, it gets two capsules. These capsules can be mixed with the puppies food, so that the puppy isn’t even aware that it took any medication. This medication is also free of side affects and won’t upset the puppies stomach.
After 6 Months:
In addition to the heartworm medication you will be giving your puppy, you will also want to administer flea medication once per month. Frontline or Advantage work well keeping fleas away from your growing puppy. Whipworms actually come from flea eggs so it is just as important to protect your puppy from fleas as they can lead to a worm infestation.
Another option to keep fleas away is to use Sentinel. Sentinel works to kill fleas, and parasites such as the worms that cause your puppy problems. The only downside is that Sentinel doesn’t keep ticks away like Frontline and Advantage do. You will need to speak to your Veterinarian as to which product to use. The important thing is that you are doing something to prevent your puppy from getting infested with ticks so that the puppy won’t later get infested with worms.
Tips:
Keep cleaning up after your puppy defecates. This is extremely important as your puppy will be expelling worm eggs in their feces. If the puppies go near it, they can re-infest themselves and you would then have to start treatment all over again.
Warnings:
You should not begin de-worming your puppy if the puppy is sick. This could make the puppy worse. If your puppy is having any type of health problem at all, you need to take it to see a Veterinarian. The doctor will find the cause of the puppies ailment and give you instructions on how to help the puppy get better. The Vet can then let you know when you can begin the de-worming treatment.
